In this module children become aware of the lives of men, women and children from different social and cultural backgrounds with practical experiences from ‘below’ as well as ‘above’ stairs.
The theme of laundry is explored downstairs with hands on use of washboards, copper dollies and the mangle or wringer.
Pupils explore the idea of continuity and change through the use of real washing utensils used in the past.
Children become familiar with life above stairs by dressing up in 18th century costume exploring and discovering the beautiful historic interiors of the house, and finding out about the lives of children and adults who lived there in the past.
